Green Lantern Corps is Still in the Works, Confirms the Writer

01/09/2018

Despite the recent behind the scenes shake-up at Warner Bros. and DC Films, Green Lantern Corps is still very much in development.

The long-in-development Green Lantern film seems still alive. At the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, writer David S. Goyer was promoting Krypton when speaking to IGN about the current state of Green Lantern Corps. Goyer says the film is “still in the works” but also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the status of films in the DCEU. Goyer couldn’t explain when fans would receive updates on the movie’s development.

I don’t know. Who knows, especially with what’s currently going on with the DC universe? There’s obviously a whole recalibration happening with that right now.

The changes David Goyer refers to is the announcement of Walter Hamada as the president of DC-based film production. Also, as for his comments about what’s “currently going on with the DC universe,” Goyer is referring to the possibility that Justice League‘s failure could impact the DCEU’s upcoming projects. Since Justice League failed to meet Warner Bros.’ expectations, it puts the future of the DCEU in doubt. So far, however, DC Films has shown no interest in adjusting their slate in response to Justice League.

Green Lantern Corps has been one of the biggest enigmas within the DC Extended Universe, after the film was first announced back in 2014. In the years since, the film has gone through a few evolutions, with potential directors, including Goyer, being rumored on a pretty regular basis. According to latest news, the movie will be written by Goyer and Rhodes along with DC creative chief officer Geoff Johns who is serving as executive producer on the project. An unconfirmed description has it that the movie is: Lethal Weapon in space, and it’s based on a comic book origin story. The focus will be on two characters: Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The latter is an African American Marine sniper before he joined the Lantern Corps and the story very much focuses on his relationship with Jordan and the Corps.
