American Assassin Release Date Set for September

Lionsgate and CBS Films have set a Sept. 15 release date for “American Assassin,” starring Dylan O’Brien, Michael Keaton, Sanaa Lathan, and Taylor Kitsch.

Lionsgate and CBS Films have set Michael Cuesta’s “American Assassin” for a September 15 release date. Based on Vince Flynn’s novel, the movie follows Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton), who would be the most feared training officer in the CIA if more than a handful of people at the agency actually knew of his existence.

As the story begins, Hurley’s deputy director (Sanaa Lathan) tasks him with training a black ops recruit devastated by the loss of his fiancée to a terrorist attack. The pair is eventually dispatched on a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent, played by actress Shiva Negar, to stop a mysterious operative (played by Taylor Kitsch) from starting World War III in the Middle East.

Published by Atria Books and in mass market paperback by Pocket Books, both imprints of Simon & Schuster, “American Assassin” is one of fifteen novels set in the world of counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp. Every single one has been a New York Times best-seller, the three most recent entries have been number one New York Times best-sellers, and the series has sold nearly 20 million copies to date.

The September release puts the movie after the big summer blockbuster season, but up against some other major action movies, which may come as something of a surprise. Kingsman: The Golden Circle will be released later that month on September 29, after it was pushed back from a date earlier in the summer. Another military action-thriller, Renegades, will also be released this month, on September 1.

Along with “Assassin,” which is currently in postproduction, “Teen Wolf” alum O’Brien is also slated to appear in “Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” which recently resumed filming after O’Brien sustained an injury on set that required hospitalization.

Keaton will next appear opposite Tom Holland in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” due out July 7.
