The Larking and Lacey Frontera Fund is a non-profit organization that has been operational for about one decade. Its primary focus is to ensure that individuals and foundations that protect the rights of immigrants have sufficient funds to run their operations.
Michael and Jim created the organization using $3.75 million that they were offered a settlement fee. Both of them are journalists, and they co-own the Village Voice Media and Phoenix News Times.
They have been committed to fighting for the rights of immigrants, and the Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio always tried to gag them. In October 2007, the duo was arrested by the sheriff for writing stories that exposed the proceeding of the grand jury to indict any journalist who wrote negative stories about him. The arrest was in violation of the Fifth Amendment rights the Michael and Joe.
Lacey and Larkin revealed that the grand jury subpoenaed them to give the names of the people who visited the New Times website to read articles about the sheriff. Arpaio abused the authority of his office and illegally profiled immigrants along highways.
He also oppressed people and organizations that defended immigrant rights. Michael and Joe went to court, and they were paid $3.75 million because the sheriff department had violated their Fifth Amendment rights. The Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund has enabled the journalists to accomplish their dream of supporting Arizona-based immigrants.
The American Civil Liberties Union is nationally appreciated as one of the organizations that campaign for the rights of immigrants. It was started about six decades ago and currently runs divisions across the United States. The body’s Arizona branch receives funding from the Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund. It has made significant accomplishments that have allowed Arizona-based immigrants to have better lives. In 1960, ACLU went to court to end a law that declared multi-racial marriages as illegal. This was the first major case that it won. It later committed itself to fighting for the exoneration of a laborer who was called Ernesto Miranda.
The court sent Miranda to prison for rape based on testimony that he gave to the police. The worker was later released, and his case led to the creation of the Miranda warning, which is read by the authorities across the United States whenever they take an individual into their custody.
The ACLU is still committed to making sure that all immigrants have a good life just like the natives. It went to court to ensure that all immigrants have the right to be released on bail whenever they are arrested. The organization was also against the “Papers Please” SB 1070 legislation, which had offered power to the local police and sheriff departments to enact the immigration laws.
ACLU is currently pursuing several cases in court to ensure that immigrant rights are not violated. It has filed a petition to stop the deportation of immigrants who are arrested for small offenses such as using fake work permits. The organization has also opposed the governor’s order to stop issuing driving licenses to young immigrants.
